Interview Questions and Answers for Data Analyst Role at S&P Global
1. Tell me about yourself.
This is usually the first question in any interview. The interviewer wants to know your background and how it connects to the job.
“I am a recent MBA graduate with a specialization in Finance. I have a strong academic record and a keen interest in financial data analysis. During my course, I learned about financial statements, corporate finance, and secondary research. I have also worked on a few college projects that involved Excel-based data analysis. I am now looking to start my career in a company like S&P Global, where I can grow, learn more about global markets, and use my skills to contribute to high-quality data research.”
2. Why do you want to work at S&P Global?
This question checks if you’ve researched the company and know its value.
“I want to work at S&P Global because it’s a globally respected company that provides important financial data used by top businesses and investors. I am excited about how S&P Global focuses on Essential Intelligence and helps decision-makers through accurate data. Also, the company’s values like Integrity and Discovery match my own professional goals. I believe I can learn a lot here and grow my career by working on real-time data and global market trends.”
3. What do you understand by financial statements?
This tests your basic knowledge of finance.
“Financial statements are official records that show a company’s financial performance and position. The three main types are the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. The balance sheet shows assets, liabilities, and equity. The income statement shows the company’s revenues and expenses over a period, and the cash flow statement shows how cash moves in and out of the business. Understanding these helps analysts evaluate a company’s financial health.”
4. How do you conduct secondary research?
This is important because the role involves researching public documents and online content.
“Secondary research means collecting data from already published sources. For example, I search government websites, stock exchange filings, company reports, industry journals, and financial news portals. I focus on gathering accurate and recent data. For this role, I know that finding reliable sources and summarizing the right insights is very important.”
5. Are you comfortable working in rotational shifts, including night shifts?
Be honest and show flexibility.
“Yes, I am comfortable working in rotational shifts. I understand that S&P Global is a global company and data needs to be processed around the clock. I am open to working night shifts and different time zones if needed, and I am mentally and physically prepared for it.”
6. What are your strengths related to this role?
Talk about skills useful for a data analyst.
“My key strengths are attention to detail, analytical thinking, and good research skills. I am also good at using MS Excel and I can learn new tools quickly. I am a fast learner, I can follow guidelines properly, and I can stay focused even when working on repetitive tasks. These are very important when dealing with large amounts of financial data.”
7. How would you handle a situation where you find inconsistent or missing data?
Shows how you solve problems at work.
“If I find inconsistent or missing data, I would first double-check the source and verify the entries. If needed, I would look for alternative trusted sources to cross-verify. If the problem remains, I would escalate it to my supervisor or senior analyst and suggest a solution based on the guidelines. Accuracy is very important in this job, so I would make sure not to assume or enter incorrect information.”
8. What do you know about S&P Global’s products or business lines?
Shows your research about the company.
“S&P Global has various business lines including Market Intelligence, Ratings, Commodity Insights, Indices, and Mobility. The data analyst role supports many of these lines such as Fundamentals, Filings, Estimates, Market Data, and Private Equity. These business lines help clients make financial and investment decisions using detailed and trusted data. I am especially interested in learning how these datasets are built and maintained.”
9. How would you contribute to process improvement or automation?
Since the job includes LEAN/automation projects, this is a key question.
“I am always looking for ways to improve processes. For example, if I notice a manual step that can be simplified using Excel formulas or tools, I would suggest and test the idea with my team. I also want to learn automation tools like Power BI or Python in the future, so I can help make data collection and reporting faster and more efficient.”
10. Do you have any experience using Excel or MS Office tools?
Basic Excel knowledge is often expected for analysts.
“Yes, I have used MS Excel for various college assignments and projects. I know how to use formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting, data filters, and charts. I also have basic knowledge of Word and PowerPoint. I am ready to learn more advanced Excel features depending on what the job requires.”
